Reasons for the horizontal organization of industry:

1. cheap land in the metropolitan area or in rural areas

2. low-cost building technologies (Prefabricated, undemanding statics, etc.)

3. simplicity of construction operation

4. simple manipulation of the loading and unloading of goods (without the use of lifts, etc)

5. visual clarity of factory - production control - cooperation in production, etc.

I also imagine a vertical plant project, with a minimum footprint, but it should be for specific industries who produce specific products + very intelligent investor.

I think, most of the factory buildings are constructed on cheaper lands and as soon as the demand in that area is completed, the owner would like to shift the company to some newer area, which would be even more profitable and cheaper. So, it is a part of the planing industry rather than the part of the design industry.

The activities within the building decide the form and pattern of the bldg. The activities in most of the industries are linked horizontally.To get the industrial activities, particularly those manufacturing, assembling, processing etc., against gravity is costly from point of view of lifting and the energy required for the same. You almost have answered the question yourself in your last sentence. saving land is not as important as saving energy. Shri. Joginder singh has given that explaination but that is not the main reason.

thank you for the replies Mr. Saini and Mr. Hambarde. I agree to the points.I herby ask you another question - Land is really scarce, and Energy too, is it not possible to reduce the usage in both categories? I am looking at an experimental model (architectural) of agro - based industry.

Land as such has an artificial price. Land has no cost and so cannot have pricce. It has value which depends upon what returns do you get by using it. for example a piece of cultivable land and that used for erection of a building will have different value depending on its location and use. As such cultivable land must not be used for non-cultivation use. In this case non cultivable land out of urban or rural settlement reach is to be selected for industry, more so for agro-based industry. So, we need not bother about saving almost useless land and try maximum to save energy by planning industrial activities majorly horizontally.

Hello Davor,I have undertaken this exercise of redesigning a horizontal "dairy plant" located in India. Lets see if it really changes the energy consumption while reducing the footprint. would be nice to get your feedback .

Energy consumption is complex issue because of several different types of energy:

Energy used for construction

Building the same size in height instead of width will cost 2-5 times more expensive. It depends on the technology and materials. The higher price includes a more energy used. All in all - I think that the construction of vertical factory which uses a large weight (heavy machinery, much of the fluid container, etc.) require truly massive construction - and it's not cheap and requires a lot of energy use in the initial stage. In the case of the dairy industry - with milk tanks should certainly be on the ground.

Also - all industries that have a lot of vibration should be placed more horizontally.

As more compact volume - the greater energy savings.

Heating energy

The energy used for heating the object (if any) will depend on the used isolation facility. Heat always goes up, so it is possible to use it in higher forms better. Also, the higher object is exposed to the elements (wind, sun, etc.) more than horizontal building. The horizontal object can use the energy of ground at which it lies. A smaller footprint means less contact with the ground.

The similar principes probably holds for cooling energy facility.

Electrical energy

At higher objects, it is necessary to use lift for communication of people and cargo. Higher volumes and facade are more exposed to light.

Wind energy

Higher forms can use it.

Solar Power

Horizontal building with a large area of the roof it could be better utilized.

Geothermal energy

This type of energy can be used for heating of both types.

It is up to you to superimposed your industry and architecture through several studies and the solution will probably be obvious.

Hi Nidhi, we participated in an industrial building which length was dictated by the machinery utilised.

Even if the building has a large footprint, it was possible to integrate some energy efficiency strategies.
