The answer to this question is not straight forward. I remember there was a Korean professor who has spent a lot of efforts to compare between them.

Well, it depends. Like always. FBMC, to me, looks like the brute force way of doing something like OFDM, which requires very accurate filters. Its advantages are (1) that you can get rid of the guard interval (cyclic prefix), because intersymbol interference is removed by the filters, so you can achieve the same spectral efficiency as single-carrier schemes, and (2) that using filters for each subcarrier permits the frequency channel to used simultaneously by many devices. In short, if multiple devices share the channel simultaneously, each device only having access to certain subcarriers, you won't have the tight synchronization required for transmissions in each subcarrier, that you need for OFDM.

Of course, what makes OFDM nice is precisely that you don't need any of these fancy filters! But it becomes infeasible in situations where the frequency channel has to be shared by many devices, without just allocating time slots.

I don't know for sure, but I think that what you are calling filtered OFDM is a scheme that only filters blocks of subcarriers, according to which blocks are used by different devices. This allows the filters to be wider than what FBMC requires, meaning simpler and cheaper, it still permits simultaneous use of the channel by many devices, however it has to retain the guard intervals. Consequently, it won't achieve the spectral efficiency of FBMC or of single carrier schemes.

Vinay K. Trivedi Thanks for your answer, so I know that OOB leakage is in the same order for FBMC and F-OFDM, and I also see the complexity trade-off between these two modulation schemes, but PAPR also is an important factor for me to look at, do you have any idea in which case PAPR is lesser?

Albert Manfredi Thanks for your answer, you may find what I meant by filtered-OFDM in the following Article. In the sense of complexity you are right, Filtered-OFDM is somehow simpler than FBMC, but it also needs to have CP.

f_OFDM and FBMC differ in filtering approach.

FBMC filters each and every subcarrier and so, it requires very narrowband filters, which have very long impulse response, thus this approach is not suitable for low latency communication. Moreover, FBMC is pretty complex in implementation.

Thus, f_OFDM have an edge over it, however it's OOB performance is slightly poorer than FBMC.

FBMC has real domain orthogonality while f-OFDM has orthogonality in the complex domain. Due to this real-domain orthogonality issue, FBMC seems to have lost to the race and not anymore a serious candidate for 5G. So, f-OFDM is a better match.

g the past few years, we are witnessing the emergence of 5G and its high-level performance targets. Waveform (WF) design is one of the important aspects for 5G that received considerable attention from the research community in recent years. To find an alternative to the classical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), several multicarrier approaches addressing different 5G technical challenges, have been proposed. In this paper, we focus on critical machine-type communications (C-MTC), which is one of the key features of the foreseen 5G system. We provide a comparative performance study of the most promising multicarrier WFs. We consider several C-MTC key performance indicators: out-of-band radiations, spectral efficiency, end-to-end physical layer latency, robustness to time and frequency synchronization errors, power fluctuation, and transceiver complexity. The investigated multicarrier WFs are classified into three groups based on their ability to keep the orthogonality: in the complex domain, e.g., most of the OFDM-inspired WFs, in the real domain like offset-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM)-based techniques, and non-orthogonal WFs like generalized frequency division multiplexing and filter bank-based multicarrier-QAM. Finally, the performances of these WFs are thoroughly discussed in order to highlight their pros and cons and permit a better understanding of their capabilities in the context of C-MTC.
