I'm simulating the penetration of an aluminium bullet into a ceramic target in LS-DYNA. the bullet pierces the ceramic, but before getting out on the other side of ceramic, it stops and the software gives error "complex sound speed, solid element". could you please guide me how to obviate this fault. Probably one of the elements is distorted to a negative volume by the penetrating bullet. Try a finer discretization.
You can also try to set an artifical threshold for the material's strain or stress by setting it in the material card, or in an additional *MAT_ADD_EROSION. This will delete highly distorted elements.
Given the low density and strength of aluminium, I do not think that such a bullet will penetrate a (armour grade) ceramic material......
This is why armour piercing bullets are made of ultra-high hard steel types or cemented carbide (WC/Co).
