I have experienced similar issues in the past. It means that the reference was entered in a previous version of the referencing style and has not translated to the new format. I found this when transitioning from APA6 to APA7 for some reference types. Particularly reports, government reports and government documents. If it is one of these, try changing the reference type from 'government report' to 'report' and that should fix the issue.

Because of the volume of the work and the reference record is not there so it is not easy to find out which document is affected. but I will try to go through it again.

The error code will still show alphabetically in the end text reference list. that should help you to narrow it down a bit.

Today I have fixed the problem.

The error message was the reference type. and the problematic type was generic not government as in your case.

So, this is how I fixed it:

1. In the style menu under the endnote , I selected show all fields, all the intext citations appeared at the end reference with all records.

2. From there I was able to identify the reference type that is showing the error message in APA 7th style, which is the document with Generic as reference type.

3. I then changed it from generic to a more specific type.

I have already deleted the error citation in the Endnote, but it still shows in the reference lists in the Word. That's weird. How can I solve this

The problem is with the reference type within the Endnote. Some reference types such as generic, goverment document etc were not present in some Endnote version. Thats why it shows the error message.

To solve the problem, you will need to view the reference by type. You can then identify the affected entry from the reference list and subsequently change it to the similar type available.

But as I press the Update Citations and Bibliography button in the Word, the sign [Record #*** is using a reference type undefined in this output style.] shows again? Poor me, how can I fix it?
