Does anyone have any idea, or have heard of anything involving the calculation of an "empty bed contact time" for a sintered carbon block as opposed to a GAC bed? My first gut thought is it would be the same calculation, but am usure if I am missing something. Any help would be greatly appreciated?
Most simple method is: Divide block volume (L) by flow rate (L/min). Or, perhaps more accurate way is to determine block 'void volume' : weigh dry block; completely wet out by running water through it; then re-weigh block; difference in weight is 'water void volume'. Assume 1 g = 1 mL. Then divide void volume (L) by flow rate (L/min).

I thought about including the void volume, but we also have to take into acount the outer surface of the block as well as adsorption sites. Also the void volume will include blinded pores which do not necessarily contribute to the active sites.
The other idea I had, which may not make it right, but make it more right, is to include a factor that takes into acount the percentage of active species in the block, and excluding the percentage of binder. (i.e. 0.8 for a block with 20% binder)
Good comments. Can you do BET pore volume measurements? Would that get you closer to what you want, or at least part of the answer? Tell Andrew hi for me.
Will do. I dont think it will be worthwhile to send out for BET testing just for this. I think simple is better in this case. Not worth it to spend money on this.
