Radio communication is generally a bidirectional phenomenon. So, transmission range can be used to work out the sensing range.
The range can be calculated with the help of various propagation models like Friis equation, multi-path model etc. However, for every model, the distance plays a dominant role. The other critical factor is the radiated power. It depends on the residual power of the battery/source.
