Yes, water treatment has far fewer programs being offered than does wastewater treatment. Many of the programs do little more than a mass balance where *you* specify the cut fractions to an underflow and overflow / treatment stream and reject stream.

METREX was an attempt to model particle size distribution throughout the treatment plant, and the effect of PSD on performance. Good luck getting a copy of the code.

There are two free codes.

Stimela, formerly the research tool of TU Delft, is now open source and available through GitHub. If you search TU Delft's electronic library you should find several theses that used Stimela as the development platform, and the code should contain the outcome. Stimela runs under Matlab / Simulink. Without Simulink the user interface will not work, and then you will need to do a lot of reverse engineering to bring the models over to whatever framework you intend to use.

I worked on SimEau. This was intended as a replacement for Stimela and OTTER (WRc's own water treatment simulator). I worked on the user interface. TU Delft worked on the process models. The process model library of SimEau is weak, and reflects the research interests of the PhD student, Petra Ross, who worked on it. If you can find the OTTER technical manual online you can tuse that as a source for algorithms for various treatment processes.

SimEau is free, but is not accessible on the web. It was part of the Techneau project and should have been a free download from the Techneau website, but was not signed off for release before the website was frozen. So, for Simeau, drop me a note and I will send over the program. SimEau is not open source - TU Delft wanted to keep the code closed, for their research use, and WRc was willing to go along with this.

For commercial offerings there is WatPro, from Hydromantis. This does chlorination chemistry well; everything else it does, see the first paragraph of my response. Hydromantis' leading product, GPS-X, has just been released with some form of water treatment add-on library but I haven't looked to see exactly what they are doing.

Finally there is AqMB - see https://aqmb.net/ . This is web-based. When I last looked at it is was very much another program based around user-specified recovery fractions. I haven't revisited it recently.

If you want these recovery fraction cut based programs, you could recreate them using the free process flowsheet simulator printed as BASIC source code in the back of Chemical Engineering Volume 6, by RK Sinnott.

I have also been searching for a Simulation Software for water. as Jeremy said, they are quite fewer thn the ones for wastewater.

I am now in the process of trying to develop one using SIMBA Simulation tool. Several attempts were made like for example stimela and METREX but both are not available for use. Stimela is out of the market because TU Delft University couldnt maintain the Website an dkeep the models up to date.

and METREX is a protype.

however there is WatPRO by Hydromantis, Looks like it has the most important stages of treatement. havent tried it yet though.

Through my search I have also came across WaterSpot, developed for Weesperkarspel drinking water treatement plant in Amsterdam but also not available for use and I think it was explicitly developed for this treatement plant.

I didnt know About SimEau, can you Jeremy Dudley share it with me please, would be really helpful.

WaterSpot used Stimela for the process calculations and EPANET for the hydraulics, running with a customised interface to mimic the SCADA interface for the waterworks/network.

WatPro does chlorination; everything else, when I looked (when we were developing SimEau) was fudged - settling tanks *you* specify the % removal, for example. Double the flow - % removal is the same. But chlorination was very good.

Stimela suffered from being developed by PhD students. They didn't fully take on board process flowsheeting. This meant that they did not think it important to use a consistent set of parameters - softening did not care about solids, and did not model it. So you would link models together to find that they did not pass downstream water quality parameters that were needed by the next process. This *may* have been fixed as part of the WaterSpot development.

I didn't realise that SIMBA was open enough to support water treatment - but maybe you are not looking at pesticides & DOC?

as for SIMBA it is a really nice tool, We are still studying it and trying but I think it Looks good. we have developed a small test model that meets the requirement of DIN 38404:10 but it is not published yet.

for later, DOC will be considered but pesticiedes probably not.

The DIN standard appears to relate only to the calculation of hardness. Stimela has a good model for this, as part of its pellet softening library.

Generally, straight-forward water chemistry can be handled well. Extending this to coagulation / flocculation is more difficult, and this then impacts on filtration models. Catherine Biggs (now at Newcastle University) has published research in this field, which looked promising, but doesn't seem to have been taken up - including, sadly, by me.
