IR Residency programs begin recruiting in 2015-2016. Many questions remain unanswered for both IR and DR program directors:
Do medical students really know what subspecialty of radiology they want to match into at such an early stage?
Will there be such a low number of graduates from the new IR Residency that the specialty will suffer?
Where will funding come from for many programs? Will DR positions be sacrificed for IR positions?
Do Interventional Radiologists have the administrative time, knowledge, or interest in resident education to run a complex residency program?
In the effort to avoid two classes of interventional radiologists, will there a problem with generating two classes of diagnostic radiologists? Those that have four years of training (from a DR residency) and those that have three years of training (from an IR residency)?
