In such simulations, population dynamics is a part of a larger model. Habitat dynamics through tree biomass or growth simulations is one submodel. Population dynamics is another. Both could be modeled as interacting systems in STELLA. I am not familiar with the project but I assume they propose such dynamic modeling approach.
