Hi, i am working with a new a rare specie of primate in Colombia named Callicebus caquetensis recently described.
Its is located in a high fragmented area and there are estimations of poblational size which barely reach 500 viable individuals.
I must stand a methodology for the study of its poblational density and i am not sure about the usual line transect method.

Creo que lo mejor siguen siendo los censos sobre transectos lineales en el sentido de Peres 1999 y Stevenson 1994.
Para más información sobre los primates en fragmentos está el líbro: Primates in Fragments de Marsh & Chapman 2013.
Si... claro Peres, Chapman y Buckland sustentan bastante bien el estudio por transectos.
Aún así me pregunto si será más eficiente estudiar este género por reproducción de vocalizaciones en puntos determinados, en adición al transecto. Dacier 2011 y Savage 2010 estudiaron dos especies de Callicebus y parece que hay mejores estimaciones a partir de este método.
Que me sugiere?

Tanto el método de playback como el de transecto lineal no asegura evitar reconteos de los mismos animales originando altos sesgo en tus datos.
Como sabes si no el mismo individuo que responde a distintos llamados, en en distintas horas y en distintos sitios? Cómo sabes si no fue el mismo individuo que atravesó tu transecto en varias ocasiones y los contaste como si fueran varios individuos????
Para evitar estas preguntas en tus trabajos utiliza cuadrantea, abre dentro de ellos caminos a manera de grillas, acostumbra a los monitos, síguelos desde que se despierten hasta que se duerman, así podrás identificar el el numero de individuos del cuadrante basado en sus diferencias individuales, sus home range, sus core areas y con numero de individuos y área, fácilmente calculas la densidad.....

As mentioned by the other colleagues, all methods have their strengths and weaknesses. In my opinion, your choice should take into account the level of forest fragmentation of your study region. Highly fragmented is quite superficial. Can you tell us the number of forest fragments, their sizes and approximate shapes. Depending on their characteristics, the transect method is definitely not appropriate. Additionally, titi monkeys are "shy" primates, a characteristic that compromises our ability to sight them during transect censusing.

I should be more specific...
Well, an article indicates that the area of distribution of the specie is 3439 km2. The number of fragments are continuously increasing, for 2002 the size of fragments decreased from 9.15 ha to 3.75 ha.
In total they found 30583 fragments where 56% were between 0.3-10 ha.

Si tienes posibilidades de "mapear" los fragmentos puedes tener un muy buen estimado. Aca hay un ejemplo:

I like the article that Diego posted. Along those same lines, are there any other indicators of site occupation like nests or feces that could be used to improve your estimations of population density?
Have you thought about genetic methods to answer the question? Using microsatellites from fDNA you should be able to get an accurate measure of effective population size and a count of the number of individuals
