Does "learning analytics" have intrinsic value and separate justification, besides its link to "adaptive learning", in the broader sense?

Learning starts where the learner is. In digitally-enabled environments, we can use learning analytics for knowning more about the learner in detail. If it is used for controlling and for dismissing students, I do not see it as ethically defendable. But its connection as a foundation for "adaptive learning" makes a lot of sense. Can learning analytics be motivated by anything else?
