I use cameras (with Si and InGaAs sensors) to measure intensity profile of laser beams. I want the dynamic range (DR) to be as high as possible, as to see low intensity part of laser beam profile. However the DR stated in the spec sheets of cameras (around 65 dB) was in my case always quite different from the measured DR. In my case the background pixel values are around 1000 (for 16-bit) camera and so the highest attainable DR is 36 dB. That is an order of magnitude smaller than in specifications.

What are your experience with real DR of cameras? What is the highest DR you were able to measure?
