Huge internet traffic is generated by IoT devices. Do they have a pattern? There are research papers that have mined these patterns whereas some say that the traffic can be random. Please provide me your experiences and understandings. Any reference would also be helpful.

In my experience IoT devices network traffic have a does not have a well explained pattern. Traffic can be random and depending upon context.
I think your question is too broad to allow for a credible answer. IoT traffic patterns will exist for sure, and will depend on what you are connecting to the Internet, or to the intranet. So, you need to be more specific.
For example, modern cars are introducing multiple networks, for entertainment systems, engine controls, chassis systems, and so on. There will be traffic patterns in these internal networks that have no resemblance to the traffic patterns in the networks of modern factories, or in the traffic patterns of hypothetical home IoT implementations.
IoT is just too broad to treat as one "system."
In IoT, the traffic pattern is occured based on the application areas.
Pattern in IoT is not specific for all the applications, it depends for which application you are using this IoT for eg. Facebook data and other data generated by regular applications.
Application is the key and also it should be clarified that what do you mean by pattern? if you seek for stochastic/probabilistic distributions which fits in different aspects of network traffic (such as inter-arrival times) the answer is yes.
The IoT data flows are too heterogeneous and varied. I think there is no common universal pattern!
Maybe I'm wrong but this is how I know about IoT.
