Block chain in its current state, though provide secure and decentralized transaction but are making a computer hundreds or
thousands of times less efficient because conceptually each node in the network must redundantly make the same computations as all other nodes in the network. Similarly the key idea of blockchain techologies lies in the consensus mechanism, therby requires these nodes must communicate with other nodes all around the world, which further introduces latency issues.
It is still too early to conclude this debate with a satisfying answer. However several hybrid approaches and different types of blockchain are introduced to address latency, processing,and storage challenges. But still blockchain is in its immature state. As Helge said, time will show how it evolves.
I agree with Helge Egil Seime Pettersen the PoS as many other consensus algorithms can solve the problem. Also, you have to take into consideration the private blockchain model as a centralised or decentralised database (no mining is demanded).
