Does anyone research the microsurface of Tillandsia leaves? How does it absorb water in the air?

I am trying to design a superhydrophilic surface, and I am wondering the Tillandsia leaves may have this kind of property to absorb water from the moisture air because they have no root. Is this true? Any researches about this field?
