We seek to attach spools to small nocturnal rodents and track their movement patterns. I have been told that most people use cyanoacrylate-base glues, but am unsure about the specific product type. Suggestions would be highly welcomed.
Ask Roland Kays, Research Associate at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and director of the biodiversity lab at North Carolina Museum of Natural History. He has done animal tracking all over the world. http://naturalsciences.org/nature-research-center/directors/roland-kays
no experience with animal studies, I assume you wish to glue a spool of thread to a rodent to track its movements. Cyanoacrylate should work well; I have used "Dollar Store" "instant adhesive " to good effect in mechanical applications (which adhered to skin quite well...). The adhesive will come off with shedding of the epidermis.
Hi, in my study group we use an ester-cianocrilate based glue called Superbond. If you are working with rodents from the Echimyidae family this will not work (probably). I recomend the following paper: Mendonça et al 2010 Spool-and-line in a backpack. a new technique for studying movement of small mammals DOI 10.1515/MAMM.2010.028
I have found similar performance across many different brands of cyanoacrylate-base glues. One trick that often helps is the wet the hair of the small mammal in the area where the glue will be applied prior to glue application. The main advantage of this may simply be that it gets hair out of the way so that the glue bonds to skin but it seems to help.
