We have UV VIS spectrometer operating in the range 190 nm to 1100 nm in the transmission mode. We are looking for samples, which could be prepared in undergraduate lab and used to demonstrate the variation of energy gap with respect to concentration of one of the elements/dopends.
Organic Oligomers show this very nicely, and the band gap can be fitted with a simple particle in a box model.
CdSe quantum dots work as very powerful visual example of the particle in a box model. The attached paper describes it well in the context of an undergraduate course. You can order samples of CdSe quantum dots from Fisher or perhaps if there is a research group with an interest in quantum dots/nanocrystals they may have some samples that they could give you for your students to use.
