Does anyone know the compatibility of N-heterocyclic Carbenes with alkyl electrophiles?

I am trying to determine the functional group compatibility of N-heterocyclic Carbenes with alkyl electrophiles. I am interested to know if a free NHC with no stabilizing metal will react directly with alkyl electrophiles such as cyclohexyl iodide or an alpha-bromo ketone. If anyone knows of a good reference please let me know.
