In the 9th century Kakawin Ramayana, the oldest existant Javanese epic, there is mention of Daluwang (Javanese tapa) several times. The data I gathered sofar is not clear on the translation of the Sanskrit (valkala or valka) in the original Sanskrit version of the Ramayana. I wonder if there is any ethnographical evidence of tapa in India. Thanks for your cooperation.
