I have found that by searching "graduate medical education" "research" "scholarly activity" and "ACGME" gives me some hits. Also expand to "resident" and not only "registrar".

Just be careful of the definition of "resident".

Thanks Claire; very useful. The issue I came up against was the concept of "compulsory". Many centres have research as an option, and in the States it is often performed in order to get promotional opportunities at either resident or attending level. Europe on the other hand regards it as a given part of any Masters degree, so would not single it out for special attention.

There is a lot on "facilitators and barriers" from many sources, largely where research is a voluntary option. These will have a role in our circumstances too, although the order and weight placed upon each factor might vary somewhat as to particular circumstances.

I eventually found one ref from Thailand, specifically referencing compulsory research in their system. I'll e-mail the reference when I get to my desk at med school tomorrow.

Great, I never realised that it was "optional" in the US.
