Related to crime, the esential job of authorities is how to proof that someone did the crime by a several stage of investigation either verbal van verhoor--to find fact by getting some information from whitnes--or verbal van befinding--to find fact from location of crime. on most computer crime cases, electronic evidence is still a constraints at many criminal justice. second, it is difficult to meet a whitnes because a criminal do the crime individually. Privacy is a must for a criminal because they need a quietnes to improve creativity. Thirdly, a criminal on computer cases  is virtual, so legal information is a hearsay evidence that proper for certain rule/legislation. Function of expert is really important to discribe evidence and convince judge in decision proces. Kevin Mitnick case is a legend which can give you an ilustration how the authorities can do their job properly on handling computer crime. And what about Russian Hacker Vladimir Drinkman who arrested in Netherland two years ago ?  Maybe you can listen from some victims of that case.

Mitnick is less interesting I did a lot of reading years ago about it (Hacker crackdown etc). The Russians and Rumanians are more interesting and above all the Chinese and their motives
