I have several students who use Dedoose and have found it to be quite effective. In general, I don't think there is that much difference between software packages do, it is largely a matter of what feels right to you.
With that in mind, Dedoose does tend to use "spreadsheet" formats for its more complex searches. Along the same lines, it offers lot of options for reporting search results as pie charts or bar charts. If that sort of thing feels right for you, then Dedoose would be a comfortable choice.
Something to think about: Dedoose just had a major crash that also wiped out much of their back up files. Of course, you could also have a hard drive failure with pretty much the same impact if you don't keep off-site back-ups.
I have used Dedoose for a research project and fortunately had concluded my data analysis right before their crash. I did like that the company only charged me $10/month and only for the months I used the program. I also liked that I could add collaborators easily and I could access the program from any device. But currently I am looking into NVivo because of a Twitter study. NVivo will allow me to import Twitter data, which I don't think Dedoose will do (at least from what I've been able to find out so far). It will depend on your research as to whether or not Dedoose is the best option.
Charles, I think that Dedoose would be well suited for your needs. Since it is cloud and web based, it is much better for teams based in different sites than any other package I am aware of. I believe that Transana is the only other qualitative software with a cloud service, although aimed more at video analysis, they do have new text functionality as well.
