Does anyone have experience in writing usability guidelines for the set of applications?

writing guidelines is a part of my work and I've done that at least a dozen times. My clients wouldn't be too happy if I disclose their confidential documentation, but maybe you aren't aware of the "Research-Based Web Design & Usability Guidelines" by Leavitt & Shneiderman. Since your guidelines may contain research evidence, too, Leavitt & Shneiderman may provice you with a few useful ideas. I find these guidelines quite remarkable.

General hints:

1. Approach creating guidelines like you would approach creating an interactive product.

1a. Consider user groups: who is going to read the document and find a suitable language.

1b. Find a document structure based on these user groups. It is an advantage if each user group can focus on only a specific part of the guidelines and nobody needs to read the whole thing.

1c. Get feedback from users. Best case: run a usability test.

1d. Work iteratively, if you can.

2. Do not only include guidelines on how the product shall look and behave like. Add guidelines about the design process.

3. Text length

3a. Write less, use images. One thing I have learned in many years: the more you write, the less readers will read. Designers and developers simply get paid for production not reading.

3b. Use bullet points

It may help to understand how guidelines are used in the development process (see #1). If you need insights here I remember a seminar paper some years ago. It's not exactly recent and the rise of agile development processes may have changed the landscape. But it may still help to get a grasp of the different roles and tasks in a project.

And now that I come to think of it, there was a paper once: "the usability of usability guidelines" or something like that. I can't find it in my papers but you may want to google for it. Maybe you're lucky.
