I have a model for solving cfd and thermal equations occuring in FSW. I can solve cylinderical and conical pins, but I have not tried yet threaded pin. I did not perform any experiments. I am dealing with CFD modeling of FSW and you should have a look at the FEM modeling of FSW. You should have the structrural point of view. By way of structural analysis you can investigate the residual stresses taking place in FSW. In CFD modeling one can investigate the metal flow. As a result I cannot say any other things about the ABAQUS modeling of FSW. I am solving FSW poblems with COMSOL.

you can model this process using DEFORM 3d i have compared different pin profile numerically such as tingle cube and cylindrical. with deform you can obtain material flow temperature grain size and strain disterbution.
