I have been using what I am calling "hybrid" assignments for lack of a better word. What I mean is that I have started to work on assignments that allow students to choose between writing a standard academic essay or opting for an alternative format such as a poster, poem, brochure, and so forth. The students who select the more creative, nonstandard option are asked to write a short explanation of how their work relates to course material. The results this semester were stunning and I would like to write about it. I would also like to use this type of assignment more often and so I am interested in hearing ideas and finding published literature on the topic. Thank you in advance, DR
It sort of sounds like using multimedia sources when pursuing answers to questions. Have a look through the academic literature at what some primary school teachers are getting their English literacy students to do using ICT. I think you might find some parallels.
This is my research area (arts-based practices in ELA). I have a few examples in my conference presentations in Researchgate. I also have an article about sketch-to-stretch and drama in the classroom.
You might check out Jeffery Wilhelm's books Reading is Seeing and You Gottta Be the Book. I have a book chapter on this but is not out yet. I will post when it is published.
