Does anybody have a good protocol for extracting DNA from mouse fecal pellets, without using a commercial kit?

Standard proteinase K lysis of fecal pellets does not seem to work.

The main problem seems to be how to get rid of excess (fecal) material.

Any suggestions will be very welcome.
