I get worried by the intensity of the debates about issues like consciousness and cognition.and feel that these debates may intrinsically wrong headed. Raymond Williams got into this with his text of Keywords but does not go far enough. Accepting that language has emerged through use, some words will have developed through complex recursive practices of reference to practical abilities. Concepts like thought and mind and consciousness emerged and became named. Initially these referred to what was manifest and were functional terms but over generations they have become reified and what is now real stands in need of explanation. Can this be said clearly enough to defuse these debates
