Quite often we use Cases in the classrooms for teaching either a concept or for improving decision making skills (That's what we consider!). I want to ask whether these case studies are really helpful? Please let me know your views.
Case studies are helpful in developing students critical thinking and higher order thinking. This is actually an excellent strategy in teaching sciences and mathematics. One problem with this method is when students are not interested in the topic or the case study is not appropriate to their level. One important thing should be considered when planning and crafting the case study is that the primary concern should be the appropriateness to the level of the students. Another would be is in the manner that collaboration and cooperation among students will be developed.
The best way for experiential learning that I have observed is Simulation Packages, However, these software are in very limited Institutions in practice, therefore, Case studies are fair enough in giving an idea about a practical situation and its possible solutions that may further be moderated with the help of class discussion and faculty member.
I completely agree with Hassan Alomari, that some times students are more inductive. They have less understanding with cases and more understanding with examples.
This phenomenon is found in the less exposed students. Who has not seen and interacted with the external world?
Right question at right platform ! Thums Up Dr. Garima.
Case studies can be very effective in class room in the hands of a very proficient teacher. participant centered learning require considerable skill level from the instructor and also a conducive class room and institutional culture. It is very useful to expose the mental models of students . However it is a steep learning curve for the teacher and one needs to invest heavily in being a good teacher. The problem in India is that what transpire in class rooms is not participant centered leaning though case studies may be used. Case lecturing by instructor and case presentation by students alone may not make it a case class.
Thanks for your views. It is in fact one of the necessary method of learning but yes as suggested by Mark the Cases must chosen according to the level of students. However, it is again difficult to find students of same level as every class is a mix of all kinds of students. In such scenario Simulation may be the best technique but it is still a challenge for most of the institutions to have such softwares.
I do agree to your views Prof. Anandakuttan that a successful case class requires efforts from both sides, that of instructor as well as of participant's.
Good ideas up there. I think we need to decide as well what we want from a case study. We have to conceptualise first, make a framework to gather data, make an analytical tool and then utilize the findings to improve learning. There is involvement of a full fledged process. A concerted and well thought case study will guide us how to help improve learning of our students. You may like to see comparative study on my postings. Thank you for asking an interesting question. I hope the above helps!
I understand that, case study is based on the premise that such more cases exist, thus ultimately can help in generalization as expect from the research. Case study is just a depth study of already studied phenomenon, which can highlight a pattern, exception and peculiarity which we would have missed in a generalized study. Case study is aimed at either confirming the generational or opposing it by virtue of in depth study.
Hi, I enjoyed going through the suggestions and views, learnt a lot. In fact a case study would possibly have a similar effect of having learnt about a case.
I would place my observation , humbly here, I underwent a training at IIM Ahmadabad, (2006) there were loads of case studies ( eg. Star bucks coffee, Cipla Pharmaceuticals and on a Problem faced by a nursing home specialized in renal transplant) in a week long session where as participants , we were asked to be participating in case studies, engaged in solving problems, looking for analytical views on a situation and the outcomes generated by the participants, as decisions, importantly for each of our suggestion, we have to look into the cause of the decision and the effect it could generate on short term and long term. This had given us, the participants ,the freedom to think out of the box, the options one could generate for solving problems etc. In my view case studies are essential to simulate a climate for learning, under the guidance of an experienced and well exposed resource person as a facilitator.
Case study is a very important tool to make students to learn about the kind of problems that exists in the real world (business world of course). However, I think it is equally important to consider following things:
i) Nature and type of cases selected
ii) The expertise of the mentor (how she/he will go about it) how much command and understanding he/she has and how he/she always goes down the road all the time with same zeal and sprite. How one make a link between theory and practice.
iii) the students should be well aware about the governing theories or practices in the market and then should be exposed to the case (or vice versa). Simply they should be able to link their learning to something instead of having no link.
iv) The mixture of theory, practice and cases in the course design also will have an impact on the overall learning. If a class is dominated with case studies and not linked with theory that may lead students to assume they haven't learn anything.
I hope this answer the questions from my perspective.
Yes indeed Garima, we use case studies to teach students and also we develop case studies related to our fields to teach students. What we teach from the theory can explain in better way through studies.
Case study is one of the most effective learning strategies. It helps students to improve their comprehension and interaction with the studied topic as many researches previously indicated.
From case study method..The students can learn how theories can be practiced in organizations and the practical difficulties faced by managers in actual senario
It depends on the way how teachers use case studies as a teaching tool. All depends on how the teaching notes of the related case study are being used in the class. So, preparing teaching notes alongside the case study is a must for an effective outcome.
But my experience is that, most of the time students are unaware about what the teacher wants from the case study. they take case study as an headache. they just read the case study, go through questions. match the main points of questions giving in the study. put these matching words in the answer sheet, but they never try to think upon extractions of original meanings of the study. it depends upon the teacher psyche how good he/ she convey the importance of the study.
