A product is the item offered for sale. A product can be a service or an item. It can be physical or in virtual or cyber form. Every product is made at a cost and each is sold at a price. The price that can be charged depends on the market, the quality, the marketing and the segment that is targeted.
According to Business dictionary,
1. A good, idea, method, information, object or service created as a result of a process and serves a need or satisfies a want. It has a combination of tangible and intangible attributes (benefits, features, functions, uses) that a seller offers a buyer for purchase. For example a seller of a toothbrush not only offers the physical product but also the idea that the consumer will be improving the health of their teeth. 2. Anything that is an outcome of our efforts is a product !!! On a retail shelf it is a salable commodity while if it is a publication then it is a byproduct of our efforts ...

Good question, in its simplest form a product is the result of work of some sort whether it is physical, emotional, or intellectual. That product may be sold, kept or given away. That is not the goal. The meal you eat is a product, the caress of a hand is a product of love and certainly works of arts and sciences are as well.

Thus, published results including articles can be considered as products provided they add some value to a person's knowledge base or help the community use the information.
