Neem coated urea has been adopted in large scale and farmers are using it. No doubt it has been proven trustworthy to improve NUE. Apart from these I think now we should look forward and investigate into the performance of polymer coated urea in our present cropping systems. Researchers of China, US, Cannada, Japan are aggresively doing field trials in various crops. Presently few researchers of our country are involoved with this. I need your expert comments. Can you provide me any information regarding such kind of trials involving PCU in our country?
I agree..., no harm in doing research to test the efficiency of polymer coated urea, but ultimate decision to use them in India's cropping systems depends on farmers acceptance based on the cost-benefit against the efficiency of Neem coated urea.
We must try the polymer coated urea for their use efficiency under field conditions. However, ultimately the cost-benefit ratio of the new product will be the deciding factor for their acceptance of otherwise.
Yes sir, I must agree with your suggestions that B:C ratio is the prime factor to adopt it in large scale but the problem is that manufacture of PCU isn't in practice in fertilizer industry of our country. To estimate the market price we must need the production cost. Under this circumstance, we should try it only for research purpose to check its performance in our tropical climate and various soil orders as well as cropping systems. Production cost and market price is a matter of manufacturer as well as govt. policy. If we can establish its suitability in our system through various field experiments, it can be further forwared to policy makers for consideration in large scale adoption.
Yes first its usefulness must be proved experimentally. Thereafter cost can be minized using efficient agronomic prractices.

Before evaluation one thing needs to be assured is the availability of the product and that too not only for research purpose but also from commercial availability. However in this case we do lag in both of the aspects.This does not means that we should not move ahead but weighing feasibility of its commercial availability is of great importance. I did some research on growth retardants in cotton to manage excessive vegetative growth and results were very encouraging.Despite all this since last 4_5 years product could not be available in local market.So apart from publishing a good research paper, no other utility could be taken.Moreover still their is no hope for at least 2-3 years.Indian farmers is in need of immediately applicable research benefits. However we need to take a broader look for moving ahead.
I believe taking the step in testing the feasibility of this technology should be done. When the results are encouraging, then alternative production means would be investigated till the technology becomes economically acceptable.
Yes Dr. Singh, I agree with you but the question is that when does a product become available in market for commercial purpose? Answer is that when the product is experimentally fruitful and it has wide range suitabality in terms of climate, soil and crops. If we consider Neem coated urea, the research was initiated 45 years back. Now central govt. has took this techonology in mandatory manner. So, I think enormous number of studies should be conducted. Prof. Kukal of PAU has been taken such kind of venture in Rice-Wheat system. I want to know more about such kind of experiments because I am also engaged with polymer sulphur coated urea.
Currently in Nigeria and in my field, we are looking into ecological ways of maintaining soil fertility, that is minimum input from external sources.
As we all know the nitrogen use efficiency in India is quite low as compared to other countries. There is great variation in NUE depending on the crop and the cropping systems followed. Polymer coated urea as expected would help check the loss of N from soil, however there is need to develop a package for exploiting the full advantage of such materials.
There is no harm inusing it for research purpose. Many types of coting has been tried to increase n use efficiency but results are not phenominal except increase in nuse efficiency marginally. We haave to find out other agronomic ways to increase n use efficiency. In different cropping system plant population should be considered a method to enhance n use efficiency
I will encourage you to go ahead but ascertain the cost benefit ratio and the feasibility of its adoption by farmers in your environment. Am interested in the research.
