I think mobile social media is a powerful tool in the current age of virtual learning but I think social media creators should really impose an age limit especially to those who are younger than 10 years old. While social media can be used a resource for rich information sharing, it is in my opinion a hostile place, especially for children. Their minds are innocent and is still in its developing stage. Even if a child claims that he/she himself is ready to venture in the world of the internet, it will be most likely that they still lack judgement. I've personally witnessed many adults falling victim to many hoax and pranks on social media and I think children are the most vulnerable audiences to these hoax and pranks. Children are easily influenced by the outside world, strangers, and today's media. I just don't think children younger than 10 have enough judgement to be expose to the dangers of social media.

There are several factors affecting this.  First, the question the original poster asks, whether they have the psychological maturity to assimilate the content.  This is a double-edged sword.  Whether children can assimilate the content is addressed by the traditional child development literature.  The attached link is an article discussing child development and personal social networks.  However, if they are able to assimilate the content leads to more worrisome questions, many of which are not well addressed by the literature.  These include the effect of online social networks on various aspects of development, including moral and ethical development, gender identity, maturity, etc.  Is there a relationship between digital literacy, computer self-efficacy and future success for children using or not using social networking applications?  Many of the posts and topics on social media involve adult themes.  What are the effects of these on developing children?  These in addition to those posted by the previous responses.  Based on the literature, the answer is not yet clear.

Social media and the Web in general are a dangerous place for children. One point is their ability to deal with the (adult) contents as well as hostility of many social media users. Another problem ist their media competency - their naïvety and openness to strangers (which in some cases may be sexual predators). They are negligent regarding their private data, addresses etc. Further aspect are the unaware parents (either lacking the media competency or insights in their children's life). 

I cannot agree more with you, Kaja. The Web is a dangerous place, especially for children who are not being completely supervised by a responsible and aware adult. Even social media platforms can be dangerous and a risky place. I think some adults understand the risks of using the Web, but not to the extent of cyberbullying, trolls, online pedophiles, etc. Maybe that sounds extreme, but I have experienced bizarre things online that as an adult I find disturbing, to have a child exposed to these atrocities would be absolutely disgusting. 

I think 10 years old is way too young to be online. There should most definitely be regulations. I know that most kids who do want to be online would fudge their online age in order to be able to be online. I think there needs to be more tighter regulations in order to prevent this roundabout procedure from happening. 

Godwin, you brought up some excellent points. I really like that you explain the Web and social media platforms as a place for idea development and creation. That is a really positive way of identifying it. 

Social media through mobile tech can be good for kids, in terms of keeping in touch with family members and learning about new things. But I would argue that this use should be heavily regulated by parents, and parents ultimately are the ones responsible for how such use goes; unregulated access (and I would argue this would be the case for anyone 17 and younger) is a recipe for digital dossier disasters.
