Generally speaking, artificial intelligence is an optimization tool, and like any other tool, we must learn how to use it safely. The field is still growing rapidly, and with that growth there are many researchers dedicated to improving our understanding of the ethics surrounding it. Ultimately, the answer to your question depends on the problems we choose to solve, the objectives we choose to optimize, and the decisions we choose to automate when using it.

If we choose to prioritize green energy and reduce negative impacts on the environment for these intended optimization problems, AI has just as much capability to help save us from a climate driven end as it does to accelerate us toward a destructive one.
