I am aware of some research conducted few years ago by USDA-ARS and Ohio State University (Valdir Correa was the student) about the disease in maize. I do not know any work in wheat. You should contact Peg Redinbaugh http://www.ars.usda.gov/main/site_main.htm?modecode=36-07-20-00

The Lab has a lot of experience in virus diseases and insect transmitted diseases in maize and other species.

As I understand that you are asking about 2 species.

In Slovenia Pantoea ananatis has not yet been recorded on crops of maize or other cereals.

In the EPPO PQR database a preferred name of bacteria is Pantoea ananatis since it has been first recorded as pathogen causing brown rot of pineapple. As syonyms are recorded also Erwinia ananatis Serrano and E. uredovora Dye. In Europe it was officially reported only from Italy and Poland.

For Pantoea stewartii (on maize) there were several reports that it is absent in European countries, including Italy, Austria, Switzerland; it is present in Americas, as endophyt it can be seed transmitted. Pantoea stewartii subsp. stewartii (Smith) Mergaert, Verdonck & Kersters and Erwinia stewartii (Smith) Dye are considered synonyms. Again found only on Zea mays.

In Slovenia Erwinia stewartii is a quarantine organism on A1 list - not present.

Thank you for fast reply and great help! We are monitoring Pantoea sp. on different crops. Pantoea ananatis has appeared at Russian South at least since early 1990-s, and spread to North to cause diseases of diverse wild plants. It has been recovered from seeds of wheat, rice, barley and from leaves of apple tree. There is no so far officical report about Pantoea stewartii in Russia... Both are isolated from seeds and plants together with other Pantoea species. All Pantoea prefer to attack plants infected by other bacteria - Xanthomonas, Pseudomonas, Erwinia amylovora. There is no report about human infection associated with Pantoea ananatis so far, but, some repeated complains were recorded after work in Pantoea-infected gardens.

Pantoea stewartii cause Stewarts wilt in corn. It is now becoming a serious disease in the Midwest and I believe there have been some plants also identified in Ontario. As a diagnostic lab we have developed methods for its detection as we think it will only get worse.

P. ananatis was considered to be a disease that caused disease in cereals such as rice and oats. However, it is now turning up in many plant species. I was informed that it has been suspected to be causing rot of onions in Ontario but we have not validated this. Both organisms have the potential to cause severe losses in the crops they infect.

There are several publications indicating Pantoea agglomerans is a pathogen of humans. It also center rot symptoms in onion similar to those caused by P. ananatis. In my opinion that onion disease (center rot) is caused by at least 3 species, namely P. agglomerans, P. alli and P. ananatis. There is at least one publication indicating P. ananatis can infect humans. It is JOURNAL OF CLINICAL MICROBIOLOGY, Sept. 2004, p. 4393–4395 Vol. 42, No. 9. " Bacteremic Infection with Pantoea ananatis". However, the patient was a 73 yr old man with diabetes so his immune system was probably not at 100%. As for corn (maize), the literature is rich with information on P. stewartii. Jerald Pataky at Univ. of Illinois is an expert on that disease. Although it can be seedborne. P. stewartii is notorious for being transmitted by corn flea beetles. In fact there is an old time forecasting method that added the average daily temperatures for Dec-Feb and if it was above a certain threshold the prediction is for a bad year for stewart's wilt of corn because more flea beetles survive the winter. As for wheat, barley and rye I am not familiar with any diseases caused by Pantoea species on those hosts but they are very good hosts for resident epiphytes for species within that genus.

I want to add to my answer above. I failed to mention that P. ananatis also causes a disease of maize. Teresa Coutinho at University of Pretoria is an expert on that particular disease.

Ronald, thank you for the idea of forecasting based on vector presence. I guess, that Pantoea diseases of cereals are suitable for forecasting - infection level is high everythere. I know that P. stewartii and P. ananatis are very close bacteria. Could they be in fact subspecies of one genomespecies? Again, it lokks like these two support growth of "P. agglomerans" population on/in plants.

i isolated Patonea sp. from healthy sugarcane plants as an endophytic nitrogen fixing bacteria also it has some antagonistic effects with some of pathogeneic fungi, there are many reports about it as an endophytic bacteria in sugarcane

Ayman, thank you! The problem is that Pantoea isolated from leaf lesions is often the only microorganism obtained from plant and some strains (abot 10% of isolated) cause HR on tobacco and plectrantus. Symptoms caused on host plant are different from ones observed in filed, but we inoculate young plants only. Those bacteria are growing with Pseudemonas and Xanthomonas without antogonism.

I have not any bibliographic evidence about the presence of Pantoea stewartii/P. ananatis on wheat, barley or rye in Argentina. In my country these pathogens were reported causing wilt of maize leaves or carried on rice seeds respectively.

Fortunately recently I detected P. stewartii on Sugarcane in IRAN. These days I am writing my paper to publish . but unfortunately I couldn't get any idea about infect in barley or rye... .

Looking at the example of Dckeya and Pectobacterium comparison, I can speculate that Pantoea stewartii/ananatis coud be more warm-liking bacteria than P. agglomerans, so, they will eventually spread in wheat-growing region due to the Global Climate Changes... and start to infect other host plants. 

P. ananatis is reported as a common colonist of wheat heads at ripening. Yoshida, S., L. L. Kinkel, H. Shinohara, N. Numajiri, S. Hiradate, M. Koitabashi, K. Suyama, H. Negishi, and S.
