I have taught English for 5 year. I feel that it is. it is a great way to teach students writing in a fun way as well as students are able to see themselves published. I use Twitter as well. It is was to teach student ways to answer questions in a concise manner. Using blogging can open the door to teach students how to properly use discussion boards as well which will be helpful if the student transition into online learning. It helps teach self efficacy and netiquette. Good Luck!!
Thank you Lori. I take your point about netiquette - this is an important aspect of writing online. Twitter is often used as a link to blogs - is this how you use it?
I use it for short discussion point and for debating points. This way students need to really think about their answer. They cannot add "fluff" to it. It is really fun for the students to debate (high school level) who is the protagonist or antagonist in a book.
Interesting. Do any students feel reluctant/embarrassed engaging in blogging/micro-blogging. Jodi Dean (2010) makes the point that some bloggers don't like people they know reading their blogs. I have found that some students (higher ed) also feel this way, especially their peers.
