Well, don't we go to university to get knowledge (through teaching) and skills (research skills, medical skills, skills in dentistry etc)? So I would say that universities provide both, to willing learners. Do I need to say that students in my country are supposed to study, and not participate in demonstrations etc?
Besides that, universities provide community services. In Malaysia, medical schools provide assistance to district hospitals. UMMC (University Malaya Medical Centre) is helping out Banting hospital; Banting is where I work.
Universities offer sound knowledge in certains domains (geography, chemistry, physics of the atmosphere, medicine, transportation) but students are those who form their skills.
Students participate in training programs, training courses, professional courses. There must be a close connection between what universities offer and what do students for their personal development.
Universities can provide skills for students. Students must seek how to develop and how to build their skills.
Well from my point of view, as a ground rule Universities provide 'Knowledge (the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject.) about Skills (the ability to perform particular task)'.
As a general idea of education, Thomson once perceptively said "the influence of the environment upon the individual to produce a permanent change in his habits of behaviour, of thought and of attitude". Furthermore, Universities are here to develop a critical outlook of certain person through continuously awakening the desire for more knowledge. The way the Universities curriculum is structured, it helps students to acquire BOTH Knowledge and Skills in a very well parallel distributed way.
As a lecturer, I view a university as a knowledge and skills provider. However, the amount of knowledge and skills acquired by the students is depending on a lot of factors for example attitude, ability and so on. The following is a paper about knowledge and skills in university.
Both are significant in order for students to challenge themselves, to expand their minds, to develop necessary skills in order to analyze and exist in the world around them. There should never be an emphasis on just knowledge, nor should there ever be an emphasis on just skills.
