1. Education based income is threatened by online content, courses and training online, and students behavior changing away from human direct interaction. Cheap labor demand threatens top universities, cheaper labor demand threatens all universities.
2. Research based income is threatened by free science provided by online publishing with little if any return to universities. Science is becoming a almost free resource undermining what is left of universities as hubs of knowledge.
3. Public funding is related to social demand. If social demand for science and education provided by universities is no longer there, public funding will cease (see 1 and 2).
4. In most of the world universities cannot provide the elite students a comparable income with companies and less future perspectives.
We are busy researching, preparing courses, quizzes, midterms, exams, but is our future safe? Are "researcher" and "professor" professions worth investing into?
