There is also the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) which  released a report in Feb. 2012

The UCS summary report concisely details these methods. For example, under Corrupting the Science, the report notes five ways that corporations use their influence:

1] Terminating and suppressing research (corporations often end research or withhold unfavorable results)

2] Intimidating or coercing scientists (Scientists and academic institution are often harassed into silence through threats of litigation and loss of jobs/contracts).

3] Manipulating study designs and research protocols (using flawed or biased methodologies in their testing and research)

4] Ghostwriting scientific articles (corrupting the integrity of scientific journals by “planting” ghostwritten articles that actually promote their products).

5] Publication bias (selectively publishing positive results and burying or under-reporting negative results)

This is a very important issue, and as scientists we should do something about that. What is your opinion? Should we introduce a internet page, where we should collect all the cases of corrupted scientists? For this there are risks, and we should be very careful.

It makes me upset when I hear the term Corrupted Science or corrupted Scientist. Science was never for selfish motto. It was, it is and it will be the knowledge for the welfare of mankind.

I am not paranoid when claim that social networks, especially scientific virtual communities like this one are "real challenge" for people with various intentions. (you mentioned corruption). First step is to be introduced with this disturbing facts. Second step for scientists to make would be to find the way how to protect their "intelligence". I call it knowledge, references, intellectual capital. What ever it is, it has to be more protected then it is now!

It is not question of ethics any more, it is the question of security as well.

I really do not know. But if you see the movies Captain America The Winter Soldier and The Green Lantern, there could be.

Corrupted scientists it's amazing. I would like to give regards to anyone who shared any post for disclosing the facts. But this is the high time to generate or think about any reasonable solution(s) to get rid of such ghosts (corrupted scientists).

I am waiting for the solution(s).

What happened to morals among RG members? Every question can have different responses and arguments. Here I try to answer it differently!

Corruption is among politicians, doctors, scientists, teachers, managers, .... So what? I don't like to see this kind of question which contains names in RG. We have no right to name someone as corrupt. Are we judges? If someone is doing wrong we should not extend it! Be fair. Otherwise they would react and retaliate?Looking at some of these answers they would say if you know what is ISI anyway? Have you ever published in such journals?, Why your impact point is very low?, Are you really a scientist?, ... WHERE is RG editor now! When we ask even a polite question editor delete it but when we make accusation they are sleep!!!

So remove any names and make your point and question general and correct.  Otherwise this sort of accusation will widespread among RG members.

Very good question, yes corruption is there in science as well as scientists in few instances, as discussed above and many ways and means are being followed to earn profit --- it is becoming a business now -- and some authority must ban such kind of activities. 

There exist certainly corrupted scientist. The only difference is that such a corruption takes the form of a more sophisticated kind of bribe, maybe not a direct payment, but an indirect one: Just look out where all those 'conferences' take place (in exotic places) and wonder why such locations are chosen for...

Another kind of scientific corruption, popular in Greece and other EU countries, is that of the participation in some 'research programs, paid by EU and government funds, where the transparency is totally absent.

I think dear Costas you should also open such a thread about those 'programs'...

Actually I am referring to psychiatry and pharmaceutical companies. They even invent non existed illnesses and have medicine for that! See the links I posted.   

Costas hit the nail on the head when he referred to overmedicalization of symptoms to make new "diseases"--in truth, those with those symptoms become their market for recapturing investors money and making a profit. Treating blood cholesterol, for instance, is a huge scam as far me and my colleagues who watched with dismay this horrible saga develop are concerned. Blood lipids tell us little of the why they are there and to treat them as a disease in and of themselves is egregious at best. As we see the cellular pH (relative to the KREB's cycle) shift downward and livers pH rise  to unhealthy levels of alkalinity, what we are seeing is an increase in liver disease, GERD, and a host of other digestive issues. These go back to the quality and type of food available to the population---GMO high fructose corn syrup (HFCS)(which dominate 95% of the added sugar market), toxic artiicial sweeteners (which dominate anything marketed as "diet"), toixic food colors (giving our children many developmental issues), persistently high lead levels inhte food and water (providing a drag on neurological and physiological functions), huge increase in bromides in food and drinks. The list is as lengthy as it is sordid, and the resulting metabolic dysfunction is giving us a tidal wave of diabetes type II, gout, and the liver issues that prevent bile from sufficiently breaking down the fats in our food and causing sugars to being converted into triglycerides. Enter the Pharmaceuticals--and the plot thickens: instead of warning the public of what has happened to their food supply--no longer safe for human consumption--they instead jump in like opportunists and roll out antireflux medicines that interfere with healthy digestion cause extreme bone loss,  B-vitamin deficiencies, and higher cholesterol/triglysceride levels--next is a whole series of psychotropic/neuralogically deadening medications, anti-hypertensive medicaations, and in the most pervasive manner place everyone on synthetic statins which destroy the liver, the heart muscle, and bring a host of unintended consequences. This is the kind of corrupted science I believe we are talking about. There is a reason that Americans with only 4% of the world's population are taking up to 80% of the world's production of prescription drugs--and it is not to get the root cause of their ills, but to capitalize on them and enlarge market.       

Costas hit the nail on the head and Max made its head shine. What about lactose intolerance shown as an alergy, products to help us drink milk? The magnesium tests which is done through a blood test? What about the belief that the fat one eats will be deposited on the endotelium as if it would never be digested?

I feel there are a number of forces at work on allergies, making most of them resulting from imperfect conditions of immunology and metabolism. When those conditions are corrected, most allergies in our experience resolve. Framed in the topic of discussion here, it becomes problematic when researchers pretend that those adverse conditions do not exist and therefore the symptoms of allergy--instead of addressing underlying factors--become a "legitimate" target for new products that merely manage but never get to the root of the problem. This egregioous slant on healthcare has beome so immensely profitable that being honest about the true cause of recent trends seems to be rejected as so much hooey. In reality, the hooey lies with those who deny the causal factors so they can profit from the secondary conditions they cause. 

yes, corrupted scientists exist

Without a doubt, Costas, there exist corrupted scientists. Mostly this occurs where scientists are paid to show results in medications for which long term effects are described within the framework of short term trials. In reality, there is a vast difference in medication effects in one year's time versus the 45 day trials we often see in fast-tracked trials. Those side effects become stronger and more problematic, especially when other medications and lifestyle factors overlay those effects. 

Had no idea of that, Viktor. But it is still a great forum of information and has brought some of the best minds in the scientific and academic community together. I know of no alternative that is as well thought out and produced as RG. It has weaknesses (like anonymous downvoting and some software difficulties), but its strengths are far better for bringing us together across international boundaries. Personally, I've made many new and real friends through RG and try to keep up with more contributions to the literature through it.
