Third way of rifting seems now another possible way to address processes happening in the Earth history. It may have some tectonic/evolutionary significance.

Just a thought, but possibly the thermal co-efficient of contraction of the cooling an thickening crust would create tension fractures that released gases and liquids, and were filled in with thick viscous magma.
