Given that PFT's have a diurnal variation, can this data be extrapolated or inferred akin to saying that diaphragm parameters also have diurnal variation? If so, wouldn't our choice to choose sedation drugs say in an ICU setting, would differ based on the duration of the day considering human's circadian rhythm?

Diaphragmatic function can be assessed family accurately by ultrasound jn an intensive care set up.
In your query regarding sedatives having an effect on diaphragm, I believe unless you use a very strong or a long acting or long context sensitive half time sedative, (or obviously concurrent paralytic), the effects on diaphragm would be minimal. Anyway the ideal sedative should be of quick onset and offset thus in an ideal set up also the effect would not be clinically significant.
