We find a specific distribution of electric fields in structure for different frequencies which can be seen using em solvers and known as modes.
I would like to know how we can choose the required application depending on this specific spatial distribution.
Electromagnetic fields in bounded structures must satisfy boundary conditions which result in spatial distributions known as modes which are identified by discrete integer values called mode index or mode order.
These modes are formed as we said in structured that have boundaries. These bound structures enforce the electromagnetic fields/waves to propagate along the bounded structure, i.e. they become guided waves. Therefore, you would see modes in guided structures used to guide the electromagnetic wave along that structure, unlike unguided waves that propagate in free space. hence, such guided structure are called transmission lines for 1D guided waves or waveguides for 2D guided waves.
