Eu3+ emission depends on the site symmetry. Absence of inversion symmetry leads to Electric dipole transition dominance, otherwise magnetic dipole transition dominates. The question is, is it possible to find out symmetry distortion of a particular site when we incorporate different cations to the lattice?
Dear Malhesh, your question seems interesting but I´m not sure it is not clear. What do you mean by "different cations", you mean cations different than Eu3+? or a few percent of Eu3+ as a probing element able to find out the local site symmetry?

It deals with disorder NaLaF4 : Yb3+, Er3+ and local (i.e. not average) symmetry of the disordered sites is recovered from X-ray diffuse scattering data
@Gilles Gauthier Consider A2B2O7 or ABO4 , etc ; in these structures we can incorporate different cations to the A-site for example La0.8Eu0.2 or Ca0.8Eu0.2Lidelta, CaLa0.8Eu0.2 etc , such that there may some change in Eu3+ local site symmetry and hence in the emission properties.Is it possible to distinguish emission changes due to site symmetry distortions alone in these cases?

I think the answer is yes but the difficulty would be if the Eu3+ occupy several slightly different sites. If there is only one crystallographic site for Eu3+, this would be a good method to probe the local symmetry in the structure, as the other cations you mention are not active optically.
