In my experience with my students at my university, I use a process that enhances their writing process rather than replaces it. For example, AI can help generate ideas, improve grammar, or provide structure suggestions. By using these tools as aids, students can maintain their originality while benefiting from technology. I also always tell students to be diligent about proper citation practices. If they use content or ideas generated by AI, they should make sure they are crediting those sources appropriately. This includes understanding when to quote, paraphrase, or summarize information obtained from AI tools, thereby reducing the risk of unintentional plagiarism.

University students can balance the use of AI and the need to avoid plagiarism by adopting ethical practices and prioritizing originality. AI tools can be valuable for research, brainstorming, and improving grammar, but they should complement, not replace, critical thinking and personal input. When incorporating AI-generated content or external material, students must paraphrase and provide proper citations to credit the original sources, maintaining academic integrity. Familiarity with institutional plagiarism guidelines is essential to ensure responsible AI usage. Additionally, students can use plagiarism detection tools to verify the originality of their work before submission. By leveraging AI as a supportive tool and adhering to ethical standards, students can enhance their academic writing while upholding integrity.
