could you maybe tell me the exact type of components (as I remember right the integrating sphere from Perkin Elmer is only for Transmission?) you are looking at and more important the type of samples you are looking at. We are working with the diffuse reflectance accessory (Type Praying mantis) in terms of adsoprtion of long alkanes on soils, which is working quite well and your have approximately the signal from all spatial angle.
Paul, I would go with a cheaper version unless the sales person convinces you that, for your samples, the upscale accessory offers distinct advantages. It is difficult to tell for sure without studying the specs but, typically, the more advanced accessories have additional features like photomultipliers for weak signals, which could be an advantage but could also be expensive and difficult to maintain looking down the road. On the other hand, there are cheaper but more robust, low maintenance accessories that should serve you well for the highly-reflective sample surfaces that you've got.
The sphere is a simple plug in accessory which is useful for measuring a range of different samples, from scattering suspensions to diffuse reflectance of solid samples. The choice really depends on what aplications you perceive.
