Detection and extraction of wideband radar signals in ELINT systems?

This is a very broad question as there are a number of ways to generate wideband radar signals, e.g. pseudo noise sequences, narrow pulse, frequency chirps, frequency hopping, etc.

Do you need to process the entire 500MHz bandwidth in real time? If so, you will need some serious processing power.

Each signal type requires some prior knowledge for efficient extraction (matched filters, correlations, etc.). You need to have some idea what you are looking for. If you are close enough to the radar transmitting station, this could be as simple as monitoring RSSI over the spectrum range of interest.

You mention time-frequency analysis. Wavelet transforms may be a good place to start and are fairly easy to implement using cascaded filter banks.

1. Thank you for your caution about the pre-processing power. My mission is to design an algorithm which is able to detect and extract all radar pulses in the instantaneous bandwidth of 500 MHz in real-time.

2. I have no idea what I am looking for because there are so many types of radar signals out there. There algorithm should be universal enough to detect and extract most of radar signals at as low SNR as possible.

3. I have read some time-frequency analysis techniques. In the future, I will try with Short-time Fourier Transform and Wavelet transform techniques. Some other T-F techniques (e.g. Wigner-Ville distribution, Choi-Williams distribution, ...) may not be suitable in this scenario because of the cross-terms.

Do you have any additional suggestion for me?
