Bashey's 2004 article (Trans Am Fish Soc 133: 1516-1523) states that they used a laser pointer and a dissecting microscope, with an appropriate filter ("dielectric interference band-pass filter at 590 nm with a width of 35 nm"), to detect fish stained with Alizarin Red. Has anybody else used that method and found it effective? Thanks, Paul.
I have not used this filter techque, but have used Alizarin Red S extensively. Alizarine Red is a valid histochemical stain the stains Calcium. Staining must be interpreted with care, in that Alizarine stains bone apitite as well as calcified cartilage.

Alizarine Red can only used for the identifying skeletal part of the fishes. For larval form it can be used for counting spines, bone and cartilage parts.
