Does anyone have experience or ideas about the hardware design of power system stabilizers in a power system?
You can realize the PSS through a wide range of HW components. However, the PSS strategy that you use would play a vital role in deciding the HW that you need to realize it. Nowadays cortex M3 processors would be efficient for such tasks. Again, it highly relies on the PSS design strategy.
I can think of 2 types of PSS implementations, namely, standalone and integrated.
For the stand-alone PSS, there will be a dedicated industrial processor, which most likely will have enough computing capacity for any practical PSS strategy.
A PSS integrated in an excitation system is a bit more complicated case, since one must make sure that the processor is really able to take extra computational load for PSS calculations.
At ABB we use the PEC80 or AC800PEC for the PSS. Both perform very well.
