I would like to know the Design Procedures for designing Ferrocement Water Tank, especially for the water tanks of capacity 5000 - 10000 litre.
Is it advisable to go for rectangular shaped water tank, instead of opting for a circular one?
Do we need to add any water proofing admixure to the mortar or the outside cement plastering?
Why it have to be in ferrocement? dont you try to say concrete?
I think Ferrocement maybe is not an apropiate material for water tank. Does the tank is buried or placed in a tower?
Circular shape has a better structurally performace but is more difficult to build in place because the mould s more complex and with concrete reinforced with steel its not easy to give the round shape to the steel bars.
Rectangular Shape its ok, you should reinforce the corners, but the sahpe its easier and faster to build.
Concrete tanks need waterproof mortar inside the tank.
I dont know if this answers solve your doubts but i need a little more information about the tank, because if it is buried you have to calculate the pressure that the land makes to the walls, etc.
5 000 l = 5 m3 and 10 000 l = 10 m3 - these tanks are very small.
In every case is better to design it from steel with circular shape. These little tanks could be manufactured in plant, transported and mounted as one piece.
Some rules and advices how to design circular steel tanks you could see in API 650 and EN 14015.

But I would like to prefer the Ferrocement Water Tank due to the following reasons.
(a) Low cost
(b) Light weight
(c) Easy to repair (to prevent leakage ).
The proposd water tank is likely to be constructed over a slab constructed above (600mm ) the RCC roof of a building.

Steel tanks are not preferred. Because, the proposed Water Tank will have a filter arrngement to be constructed just above the Tank. The filter will be constructed monolithic to the top of the Tank.

But i would be worry about the building if its strong enough to suport the tank on the roof. Remember that any sismic action on the building will be amplified because the water tank on the roof.

Ferrocrete water tanks are very easy to construct. I would suggest to for cylindrical shape for the tank from the concept of strength through shape. It is stronger than rectangular one. Since it is water retaining structure. Adding water proofing admixture will be advisable. Smooth plaster with cement paste finish inside the tank and rough plaster outside the tank will work for ferrocrete water tank.
Process is very simple: Step 1. Create Pedestal with Stonechip base/Brickbat Base PCC. Step 2. Fabricate Steel cage of the required dimension with 6 to 8mm MS Bars. Tie Minimum 1 Layer of Weldmesh and 2 Layers of Chicken Mesh on it. Step 3. Apply Rich cement mortar on it with pressfilling method. Step 4. Apply Plaster on both the surfaces inner-outer. Step 4. Cure it for minimum 7 Days.
Note: To make sure of good strength and durability of tank, Fill water upto 1 ft each day after curing period completed.
