last week we where in class with a doctor that made a quick survey, he asked only three questions, the depression classic triad. it was amazing how 80% of the class answered yes to the 3 questions.
I have taught three medical universities and found some of the challenges faced by the students.
- Different style of teaching before joining medical education and during medical education. 'I used to secure highest grade in my school but I became fail in medical school term-exam' - a common experience shared by the students.
- Medical education requires more readings (international text books), some may face language difficulty. 'Teachers give pressure to read 200-300 pages per day which I am not able to do and remember all the information'
- Some students may think, "I am weak", a self-ascription
- Medical education is competitive compared to other subjects.
- Medical education is very expensive, and the students may think, "If I don't do good in education, my parents will not happy, because they have invested a lot of money in my education"
- Medical education is 'less student friendly' in many countries.
Due to many reasons medical students feel 'depressed'.
