Background - we played Jenga last night: you know, 54 pieces of wood stacked up on 18 levels one on another. You take the piece out and put it on top and so on. Building continues until the tower falls and the person causing it to fall loses.
Question: what is really a success? Starting with 18 levels you go up but is it better to win on level 24 or lose on level 31? It takes quite some effort and mastery to exceed level 30...
Well? What would you choose and why?
That is a wise question to pose. This brings me to the meaning of success and fail. Well, in one's life any success will carry a potential failure if it is compared to someone else's win/success.
A win on level 24 could make someone feel failure, and in contrary a lose on level 31 could make someone feel happy. Feeling of success does not occur in a vacuum. If you loose/fail in 24 but you are still having a good time with family and friends and building emotions and relations, To me you have a reason to feel success. @Maciek Mikucki
Success is the degree of achievement of your full potential. Hence, a child could be successful on the 3rd level, while an adult might be considered not successful on achiving 33.
Winning, on the other hand, is the degree of achievement of your goal. If you reach out your goal (worthy-agreed goal for you), you win.
In the previous example, while both the kid and the adult might be successful, it is the adult who won. The game goal is to build the highest tower.
Hence, success is a path while winning is a destination. By being consistently successful one can enlarge his/her potential to end up winning on the long run.
Earl Nightangale’s definition is the best one in my opinion, “Success is the progressive realization of a worthy idea.“
Success is not then achievement but the feeling while chasing a goal.
Both definitions are complementary. While one is philosophical the other is operational. Both refer to a defined state, i.e. your worthy ideal, aka your goal.
