It’s incredible, given the current state of scientific data and publications, that there are still otherwise respected colleagues who doubt the existence of defense priming in plants. In the biomedical field, it has long been accepted (partly due to copying insights from plant research) and is making significant waves. I recommend skeptics perform a simple experiment: Take two batches of Arabidopsis plants. Infect three leaves of one batch with virulent or avirulent Psm ES4326, while performing a mock inoculation on the other. Three days later, infect 2–3 systemic leaves of both batches with virulent or avirulent Psm ES4326. Two to three hours after the systemic infection, measure the expression of a few defense genes (e.g., FRK1, CASPL4D1) in the systemic leaves—you’ll be amazed. It is the duty of a skeptic to verify a claim rather than dismiss it without examination. That’s what defines a serious scientist.
